Click here to tell your members of Congress to remove the TRUST ACT from the COVID-19 bill.
We know that we asked you earlier this week to respond to an Action Alert to remove from the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 economic stimulus bill language harmful to the funding of single employer pension plans. Thanks to those who responded to that Action Alert.
We have just learned that added to the COVID-19 bill is the Time to Rescue United States Trust (TRUST) Act to create "rescue committees" for Social Security and Medicare that would operate outside of the regular order of Congress, behind closed doors, and their recommendations would be fast-tracked for votes on a take-it-or-leave-it basis.
On July 30, 2020, an NRLN Action Alert opposed the TRUST Act being added to the COVID-19 Health, Economic Assistance, Liability Protection and Schools (HEALS) Act. Fortunately, letters from NRLN members helped convince Congress to remove the TRUST Act from the HEALS Act.
Congress needs to address the shortfalls in the Social Security and Medicare trust funds with a bill such as the Social Security 2100 Act introduced in the last Congress, but not with the TRUST Act behind closed doors.
The latest Gallup poll in January showed that only 25% of Americans approve of the way Congress is handling its work. That is up 10 percentage points from the previous poll. The approval rating should be even lower than 25% the way members of Congress are hanging unrelated issues onto the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 economic stimulus bill.
Unfortunately, too many Representatives and Senators obviously believe that "No crisis (COVID-19) should go to waste." Congress should do clean bills on a single issue.
Please take a few minutes to send the NRLN's sample letter to urge your Representative and Senators to remove the terrible TRUST Act from the current COVID-19.

NRLN President NRLN VP-Grassroots
